12/8/24-Sunday- Day 2 “Burritos and Pinstripes”

We both woke up this morning feeling extremely well rested after turning in quite early last night. We then spent the morning writing and just generally not being in a hurry to do anything at all. After working on updating our emergency contact info we slowly broke camp and got on the road somewhere around noon. We didn’t have too much of a drive today, only a couple of hours to our next campsite with one stop planned in between. Our friends Mark & Michele have talked more than once about a small restaurant/ truck stop near the intersection of highways 1 & 5 that serves some great burritos and we were eager to try them, especially since we decided to skip breakfast this morning. We ordered 2 burritos and a Fresca to the tune of 90 pesos, less than 5 usd. As soon as the waitress sat our food down we realized 1 of these burritos each was simply not going to satisfy our appetites, “dos mas, por favor!”. The burritos were a slow cooked pork served with a hot salsa and certainly lived up to the hype!

With full bellies we continued south for about another half an hour before turning off of the highway and onto a dirt road towards a campsite that Michele referred to as “a magical cactus forest”. After proceeding through a barbed wire farm gate it wasn’t long before I had to get out of the truck and lock the hubs in for four wheel drive due to the shallow but very soft sand. The further we proceeded down the sandy track the narrower and more off camber the route became. At one point I got out of the truck to scout the road ahead only to discover a multitude of new pinstripes along with a decent sized tree branch stuck between the camper and our awning. After removing said branch I walked ahead a couple of hundred yards and found our home for the night.

We settled into a nice flat opening among the cacti and Boojum trees and it really is quite magical, that is except for the relentless tiny black flies. While they were not biting, there were enough of them to drive us inside of the camper well before dark. I finished updating our emergency contacts and we’ve made plans to rendezvous with our friends tomorrow evening in San Ignacio but for now it’s looking to be another early night and neither of us are the least bit upset about it!
